NCC Launches *315# Code to Help Nigerians Verify Mobile Phone Approval Status

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially introduced a dedicated USSD code, *315#, to enable mobile phone users and consumers across the country to verify whether their smartphones, feature phones, modems, tablets, and other SIM-enabled devices are duly approved and certified for use on local telecommunications networks.

This initiative forms a core component of the commission’s reinforced Type Approval Compliance framework, which officially took effect to enhance device standards, bolster cybersecurity, safeguard network integrity, and protect consumers from substandard or cloned equipment.

Under the newly deployed system, individuals can easily check a device’s regulatory standing before completing a purchase—particularly when buying second-hand gadgets or acquiring mobile units imported directly from abroad.

Users can execute the check directly on the target device by dialing *315# or by accessing the dedicated NCC Device Checker web portal online. If checking an alternative device remotely, users can input its unique 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, which can be easily retrieved by dialing *#06# on the handset.

The commission clarified that mobile devices already actively connected to Nigerian networks prior to the implementation of the framework were automatically cleared and verified, meaning existing everyday users do not need to take panicked action. However, non-compliant, counterfeit, or illicit devices identified under the framework face potential network restrictions.

The NCC has strongly advised buyers to verify phone credentials prior to payment, cautioning the public against unverified channels and urging citizens to rely strictly on official portals or contact support lines for guidance if verification challenges arise.
