A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has predicted that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi will defeat incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo politically in Anambra State, insisting that Obi remains highly popular in the South-East and parts of the South-South.
Momodu made the prediction during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the prospects of opposition parties in the 2027 general election.
“I can tell you something. Soludo is the same. I can bet my life on it that Peter Obi will humiliate and disgrace Soludo in Anambra State. I have no question about that,” he said.
Describing Obi as a “rock star” in the South-East and South-South, the ADC chieftain argued that the former governor’s popularity could pose a significant challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the two geopolitical regions.
“Peter Obi is a rock star. Where he comes from, especially in the South-East and the South-South,” Momodu said.
Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, in which he secured substantial support in the South-East and parts of the South-South.
Momodu Warns Tinubu Over 2027 Election
Momodu also predicted that Obi could deal a significant electoral blow to Tinubu and his supporters in the South-East and some parts of the South-South during the 2027 presidential election.
He argued that the political situation ahead of the next election differed from that of 2023, warning that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would face a difficult contest if Obi maintained his influence in the regions.
“The scenario is different this time. Peter Obi will humiliate Tinubu and all his supporters in the South-East and some parts of the South-South, and that’s dangerous for Tinubu,” he said.
According to Momodu, Tinubu would need to secure strong support across the three southern geopolitical zones while also competing for votes in the North to improve his chances of victory.
“For Tinubu to win, he needs to lock down all the three regions in the South, and he now has to go and struggle in the North, where, number one, he was supported last time by President Muhammadu Buhari,” he added.
Momodu Declares Support for Atiku
Despite his favourable assessment of Obi’s electoral prospects, Momodu declared his support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking to challenge Tinubu in 2027 under the ADC platform.
He, however, expressed support for efforts to unite opposition figures, saying cooperation among political leaders could prove decisive in the forthcoming election.
“I’m supporting Atiku, but I will be very happy when people say, ‘Oh, if you people don’t come together, you are going to lose election,’” Momodu said.
His comments come amid growing political realignments and calls for opposition parties to develop a common strategy ahead of the 2027 general election.
While Momodu expressed confidence in Obi’s popularity in the South-East and South-South, the outcome of the forthcoming election will depend on several factors, including party platforms, voter turnout, political alliances and candidates’ appeal across the country.
