Police Disperse #EndSARS Sixth Anniversary Memorial at Lekki Tollgate With Tear Gas, Target Rhodes-Vivour and Doherty

The Lagos State Police Command has once again drawn widespread condemnation following a violent crackdown on peaceful citizens gathered at the iconic Lekki tollgate to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the historic #EndSARS protests of October 20, 2020. What was intended as a solemn, peaceful memorial to honor citizens who lost their lives during the historic demonstrations against police brutality and bad governance quickly descended into chaos as heavily armed security operatives fired tear gas canisters directly into the crowd.

Activists, journalists, and everyday residents who had gathered to lay wreaths and remember the victims were forced to scamper for safety amid thick plumes of smoke that enveloped the surrounding expressway.

Prominent political figures, including Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, and civic leader Funso Doherty, were among those caught in the security sweep. The heavy-handed intervention effectively scuttled the planned memorial activities, preventing participants from paying their respects at the very site that remains deeply embedded in the national consciousness as a symbol of the struggle for accountability.

The Lekki tollgate has consistently served as an annual flashpoint of friction, with state authorities repeatedly deploying overwhelming security forces to block memorial assemblies, citing security concerns and public order.

Civil society organizations and human rights defenders have swiftly condemned the police action, arguing that the violent disruption of a peaceful memorial is a direct violation of citizens’ fundamental constitutional rights to freedom of assembly and expression.

Critics have questioned why commemorating victims of state violence continues to be treated as a criminal offense by security agencies, particularly six years after a national outcry led to promises of comprehensive police reform.

As debates surrounding civil liberties and accountability resurface across the country, the incident underscores the enduring tension between state security apparatuses and citizens demanding justice, transparency, and a fundamental overhaul of law enforcement standards in Nigeria.
