Spanish football club CD Tenerife have confirmed the death of their striker, Jesús de Miguel, who died aged 30 on Tuesday, November 3, following a serious collision during a league match against FC Andorra.
The forward suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the closing stages of their Spanish second-division encounter at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
The incident occurred when De Miguel attempted to reach a loose ball and Owono rushed out of his goal to clear it. The goalkeeper’s knee struck the striker in the chest, leaving him unconscious on the pitch.
Medical personnel immediately attended to the player, performing emergency procedures before taking him to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
The match, which was tied 2-2, was abandoned in the 108th minute to allow medical personnel to attend to the injured footballer. Owono was shown a straight red card following the collision.
Although De Miguel was reportedly resuscitated in the ambulance and initially described as stable despite the severity of his condition, his health deteriorated, and he died on Tuesday morning.
Confirming his death, Tenerife expressed profound sadness in a statement, describing the loss as a tragedy for the club and the football community.
The club also extended its condolences to his family, friends, teammates and supporters, while De Miguel’s family appealed for privacy as they mourned his death.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football community, with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid among the clubs expressing condolences.
De Miguel joined Tenerife ahead of the 2025/26 season after leaving Castellón. He scored 11 goals for the club last season and had become part of its attacking options.
His death has renewed concerns about the welfare of footballers following serious on-field injuries, with the incident casting a shadow over Spanish football.
