West Ham Sack Nuno Espírito Santo After Poor Start to Championship Campaign

West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo following a disappointing start to their Championship campaign, with the club sitting eighth in the league table after consecutive defeats.

The London-based club announced his departure on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, bringing an end to his tenure after just over a year in charge.

Nuno joined West Ham in September 2025 after the club dismissed Graham Potter. However, he was unable to prevent the Hammers from suffering relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Despite retaining him for their return campaign in the Championship, the club’s management became increasingly concerned about the team’s performances and its prospects of securing an immediate promotion.

West Ham’s decision followed consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, including a 3-1 loss to West Brom on Saturday, October 31, which left the club eighth in the standings.

In a statement, the club said its board believed a managerial change was necessary to keep its objectives and expectations on track.

“The Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the Club’s objectives and expectations remain on track,” the statement said.

The club confirmed that the recruitment process for a new head coach had commenced.

Meanwhile, former West Ham captain Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville have been placed in temporary charge of squad preparations ahead of Wednesday’s Championship fixture against Cardiff City.

Nuno’s assistant head coach, Rui Pedro Silva, and goalkeeper coach, Rui Barbosa, have also left the club.

The Portuguese manager previously enjoyed successful spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, but his time at West Ham ended after the club’s failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

West Ham are now expected to appoint a new manager as they seek to revive their promotion campaign.
