Biafra : Simon Ekpa threatens to shut down Southeast

Biafra : Simon Ekpa threatens to shut down Southeast: Pro-Biafra agitator and separatist Simon Ekpa

has issued a warning that the Southeast region of Nigeria may be shut down for two weeks if the

governors of the region refuse to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous

People of Biafra (IPOB). In a statement posted on his Twitter handle, Ekpa, a Finnish lawyer, stated that

the warning was necessary due to the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to obey court orders

requesting the release of Kanu, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

According to Ekpa, after two weeks of a potential shutdown of Biafran territory and no update on Kanu’s whereabouts, they will activate the next strategy. He did not specify what that next strategy would be.

The statement from Ekpa comes amid rising tensions in the region, as many Biafrans feel marginalized and discriminated against by the Nigerian government.

Nnamdi Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and handed over to Nigerian authorities. Since then, he has been detained despite calls from various groups for his release. Last week, Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer to Kanu, stated that the separatist’s health condition is deteriorating.

The call for Kanu’s release has been a contentious issue in the region, with many Biafran activists and supporters calling for his immediate release. The Nigerian government, however, has refused to comply with court orders requesting his release. This has led to widespread protests and demonstrations in the region.
