Enugu State Governor-elect, Dr. Peter Mbah, has pledged to prioritize workers’ welfare and promote socio-economic justice in the state. In a press statement released on May 1, also known as International Workers’ Day, Dr. Mbah congratulated all workers in the state and Nigeria as a whole, commending their efforts and sacrifices for the nation’s development over the years.
Dr. Mbah promised to create a worker-friendly administration that would prioritize the welfare of public servants through sustainable reforms, productivity, and constructive engagement that would eradicate poverty, insecurity, urban slums, and raise the standard of living in the state. He stated that the main pivot of his Social Charter with the people of the state as contained in his manifesto is to catalyze speedy economic growth that would ensure socio-economic justice for all the citizens.
In line with the theme of this year’s International Workers’ Day, “Workers Rights and Socio-economic Justice,” Dr. Mbah promised to formulate and implement impactful policies that would improve the standard of living of the people of Enugu State. He reiterated his commitment to the welfare of workers, stating that his administration would adequately train and compensate them for their labor. He also promised to ensure that no worker lives below the poverty line.
Dr. Mbah stated that his administration’s goal is to raise the per capita income of every worker in the state through policies in agriculture and agro-allied industrialization, education and vocational training, healthcare services, power and energy sector, tourism and hospitality, and digital programming and other innovative technology action plan for the youths. He also promised to facilitate the training and upskilling of farmers through support programs for sustainable agro-allied revolution.
The Governor-elect noted that his administration would overhaul and re-equip the healthcare system with qualified medical personnel, especially those in the rural communities, as part of workers’ rights, and ensure access to safe and clean water. He urged potential investors to consider visiting the state for business, promising to create an environment that would be investor-friendly and offer attractive incentives for the private sector through transparency, rule of law, and accountability.
Dr. Mbah expressed his administration’s commitment to bridging the gender gap and guaranteeing social and economic opportunities for women, stamping out poverty, and ensuring a healthy, functional social co-existence. He stated that his proposed $30 billion dollars economy would not be possible without a healthy social capital between investors and workers and harmonization of all the factors of production.
The Governor-elect called on all citizens of the state to support his administration’s vision and join hands in building a better Enugu State.
