Suspected Fraudster Who Made $500K in 3 Years Arrested for Cybercrime, Bribe Attempt

….Too Intelligent for a Salary

A 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, Patrick Akpoguma, has been arrested by the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos for engaging in a range of cybercrimes, including romance scams, identity theft, and cryptocurrency fraud. Akpoguma reportedly attempted to bribe the police with $100,000 (approximately ₦174 million) to secure his release, but his offer was rejected by law enforcement officers.

Speaking to journalists, Akpoguma confessed to his crimes, admitting that he had defrauded multiple victims by impersonating prominent individuals such as U.S. Army officer Colonel Matt Herbert and cryptocurrency expert Adam Taggart. Using a fake Instagram account under Taggart’s name, he even purchased a silicone face and hand mask for $11,200 to enhance his impersonations. Through these fraudulent schemes, Akpoguma tricked victims into sending money via Bitcoin Trust Wallets or blockchain transactions under the guise of funding fictitious projects.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, who oversaw the investigation, revealed that Akpoguma’s activities were reported by residents of Chevron Drive, Lekki, where he resides. Following his arrest, Akpoguma disclosed that he turned to fraud because he believed he was “too intelligent to work for a salary.” Over three years, he claimed to have amassed $500,000, which he used to acquire luxury properties in Lagos and Edo State, as well as a ₦100 million GLE Benz.

Despite his alleged efforts to avoid completely impoverishing his victims, Akpoguma now faces prosecution, with police concluding their investigation into his activities.
