The pro-democracy group, Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), has expressed serious concern over the arrest of its Kano State organiser, identified simply as Zubair. The arrest was reported early Thursday morning by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
TIB announced the incident through its social media platform, stating that the reasons behind Zubair’s arrest remain unclear. However, the group speculated, based on insider information, that the arrest might be linked to a Facebook post where Zubair allegedly criticized the government. According to reports, Zubair is being transferred to Abuja by the DSS.
The movement has strongly condemned the arrest, demanding Zubair’s immediate and unconditional release. “Zubair, our organiser in Kano, was apprehended earlier today by the DSS. Although the exact reasons for his arrest are yet unknown, sources suggest it could be connected to a Facebook post critical of the government. He is now being moved to Abuja. We demand his immediate and unconditional release!” the group stated.
This incident is part of a broader trend of repression in Nigeria, where dissenting voices are frequently silenced by political leaders across various levels of government. Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, there has been a disturbing pattern of targeting activists, journalists, and citizens who openly criticize government policies or actions.
Security agencies have increasingly been used as tools for oppression, with many Nigerians currently detained or facing prosecution. A significant example is the arrest of individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests held nationwide from August 1–10, 2024, showcasing the ongoing clampdown on freedom of expression and dissent.
