Aston Villa have completed the signing of West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka on a season-long loan deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy.
The 28-year-old right-back joins Unai Emery’s side after Villa and West Ham reached an agreement over the transfer. The specific conditions attached to the obligation to buy have not been disclosed, although West Ham had previously valued the defender at around £25m.
Wan-Bissaka missed West Ham’s opening two Championship matches of the season as negotiations over his return to the Premier League continued.
The defender joined West Ham from Manchester United in 2024 on a seven-year contract and made 65 appearances for the club during his two seasons in London. He featured 25 times last season as West Ham were relegated from the Premier League.
Villa have moved for Wan-Bissaka to strengthen their defensive options as they prepare for a demanding campaign that will include both Premier League and Champions League football.
Before joining West Ham, Wan-Bissaka spent six years at Manchester United, making 190 appearances and winning the League Cup in 2023 and FA Cup in 2024.
He also represented DR Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all four of the country’s matches as the Leopards reached the round of 32.
The structure of the deal is similar to Villa’s loan agreement for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott last season. Elliott joined Villa with a £35m obligation to buy, subject to him making 10 league appearances, but made only four appearances before returning to Liverpool this summer.
Wan-Bissaka is now expected to compete for a place in Villa’s defence and could make his debut against Brighton on Sunday.
His arrival provides Emery with another experienced option at right-back as Villa prepare to balance domestic competition with their return to the Champions League.
Villa finished fourth in the Premier League last season and also won the Europa League, securing their place among Europe’s elite clubs for the new campaign.
