Jonathan Urges Unity as Fubara Faces Political Challenges, Says Trials Will Shape Him into a Stronger Leader

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed optimism that the ongoing political conflict between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged political ally and current minister, Nyesom Wike, could strengthen Fubara’s political leadership. Jonathan likened the governor’s challenges to the battles that forge a “General” in politics.

Speaking during an event in Nihi Community, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Sunday, Jonathan acknowledged the tensions Fubara faces but urged him to remain steadfast in governance and not be distracted by political antagonism.

“You are facing challenges in your first major political office, but remember, no one becomes a General without fighting battles,” Jonathan said. “These trials are shaping you into a stronger leader. With your commitment and the visible support of the people of Rivers State, I am confident God will guide you through.”

The former president also called on the people of Rivers State to unite in support of Governor Fubara, emphasizing that peace and development in the state are critical to the stability of the Niger Delta region and the nation at large.

“A peaceful Rivers State is vital. Any significant unrest here could destabilize the Niger Delta, affecting our national economy,” Jonathan warned. He appealed for calm, urging politicians to allow those in office to complete their tenures without unnecessary interference.

Governor Fubara, who attended the event, expressed gratitude for the recognition and a newly conferred chieftaincy title. He reaffirmed his commitment to delivering impactful projects and services aimed at improving the lives of Rivers State residents.

The political conflict between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, has led to significant tensions, including a factionalized House of Assembly and attempts to impeach Fubara. Despite these challenges, Jonathan encouraged the governor to remain focused, as such experiences would enhance his leadership and resilience in governance.
