The newly appointed Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, held a meeting on Tuesday with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) at the Lagos House in Marina. The purpose of the meeting was to seek the council’s blessings and provide updates on the recent impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Meranda explained that the gathering was an opportunity to inform the council about the events that transpired in the House of Assembly and to seek their approval. She stated, “We came to brief them on what happened in the House yesterday and to secure their blessings, which we have successfully received.”
The legislators justified Obasa’s impeachment, emphasizing that the decision was taken to uphold the integrity and dignity of the Lagos State House of Assembly. According to them, the move was necessary to protect the sanctity of the legislative body and ensure its continued effectiveness.
On Monday, the House of Assembly had voted to impeach Obasa, subsequently appointing Meranda as the new Speaker. Addressing the media alongside her colleagues, the lawmakers noted that the change in leadership was inevitable, reflecting the fluid nature of governance. They explained, “This is simply a transition of leadership. Change is an inevitable part of life, as only death is constant. The constitution grants the House the authority to regulate its proceedings, and the members decided to make this leadership change.”
