Flydubai Co-Pilot Attacked Captain with Axe in Foiled Terrorist Attack Over Saudi Arabia

In a major security revelation, authorities in the United Arab Emirates have confirmed that a co-pilot operating a Flydubai flight executed a planned terrorist attack after assaulting the captain on the flight deck with a crash axe in an attempt to forcefully down the aircraft.

The UAE Prosecutor General disclosed that the co-pilot, identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, initiated his attack in the cockpit while flight FZ1073 was en route from Dubai to Israel carrying approximately 170 passengers, most of whom were Israeli citizens. Flight tracking data revealed that following the violent confrontation, the plane plunged sharply by over 16,600 feet in roughly 30 seconds over Saudi airspace.

The captain, Smit Machchar, was struck during the violent struggle but managed to maintain control of the aircraft, forcing an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia where the suspect was taken into custody.

According to investigators, al-Hammami had previously been dismissed from his role at Oman Air due to holding extremist views and adopting radical ideological stances before subsequently joining Flydubai. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the suspect had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination prior to the attack.

Joint investigative teams involving Emirati and Israeli officials are currently conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to establish whether the suspect acted independently or under direct instruction from a broader terrorist network, as international aviation regulators evaluate security protocols surrounding flight crew background checks and cockpit safety measures.
