The Enugu State Police Command has urged the public to dismiss a widely circulated video that allegedly shows police officers assaulting a young man in Enugu for refusing to allow them to search his phone. The video, which has sparked widespread reactions and calls for an investigation, has been deemed misleading by the police.
In an official statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, it was clarified that a thorough review of the footage confirmed that the incident in question took place over five years ago, specifically on January 4, 2020. He further explained that the officers involved in the incident were promptly identified, subjected to disciplinary procedures, and appropriately sanctioned in accordance with the Nigeria Police Force’s regulations.
Ndukwe emphasized that the video was intentionally recycled and recirculated to mislead the public and provoke unnecessary tension between the police and law-abiding citizens. He urged the public to remain calm and avoid being swayed by misinformation.
Additionally, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, issued a stern warning to individuals responsible for spreading the outdated video, describing it as a “malicious act.” He called on them to desist immediately, stressing that such actions only serve to create unnecessary distrust between the police and the public. The commissioner also reassured citizens of the police command’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
