Nigeria’s former Military President, retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has acknowledged that the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola was the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Babangida made this revelation in his autobiography, *A Journey in Service*, which was officially launched in Abuja on Thursday. Through former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book at the event, Babangida admitted that Abiola met all the necessary criteria to be declared president.
“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida stated in the book.
Abiola, who was the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), had secured the majority of the votes and achieved the required geographical spread to assume the presidency. However, Babangida described the decision to annul the election as one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Despite the annulment, Babangida expressed relief that President Muhammadu Buhari later recognized Abiola’s victory and posthumously honored him with the title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), a prestigious award traditionally reserved for Nigerian presidents.
