Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, a convicted billionaire kidnap kingpin, has requested the Lagos State High Court to consider his plea bargain application on compassionate grounds. In a bid to show his remorse, Evans expressed a willingness to surrender all his assets as part of the agreement, including his 14 new trucks, which he proposed to donate to the Lagos State Government. The proceeds from the sale of the vehicles would then be given to the victims of his past criminal activities.
Evans, who is currently incarcerated at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, claimed that he has undergone a personal transformation and is no longer involved in criminal activities. He revealed that during his time in prison, he pursued further education, earning a teaching diploma in economics from Yewa College of Education. He now works as a teacher at the correctional facility. Through his lawyer, Etudo Emefo, Evans expressed deep remorse for his past actions and explained that he had taken the opportunity to educate himself while incarcerated.
In his application, Evans also shared that the Federal Government had granted him a scholarship, which enabled him to pursue a National Certificate in Education in Economics. He further elaborated that he is now in his second year of study in Political Science at the National Open University of Nigeria under the same scholarship scheme. Additionally, he has completed training in welding and metal fabrication, passing all relevant tests. Copies of his academic certifications and other supporting documents were presented to the court.
Evans pleaded for mercy from the Lagos State Government, emphasizing that without forgiveness, the Federal Government’s investment in his education would be wasted, as he would not be able to apply the new skills he had learned. The case, which was scheduled for trial, included a mention from the prosecuting counsel, Alaba Kuku, who confirmed that Evans had expressed interest in pursuing a plea bargain. He also stated that the application is under review by the state government.
