Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, has tendered his resignation from the State Executive Council. His decision follows Governor Umo Eno’s recent defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a formal resignation letter dated June 6, 2025, and addressed to the governor, Ememobong cited personal convictions as the reason for his departure, stating that he could not, in good conscience, adhere to the directive requiring political appointees to switch parties alongside the governor.
Expressing sincere gratitude, Ememobong described his tenure in the cabinet as both enlightening and an honor. He acknowledged the trust placed in him by Governor Eno, who had appointed him to lead two vital ministries—first the Ministry of Information and later the Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport. Ememobong praised the opportunities the roles provided and stated that he deeply valued the experiences and knowledge gained during his service.
He made it clear that his decision to resign was not taken lightly but stemmed from a firm belief in political principles. Responding to the governor’s instruction that all cabinet members must follow him to the APC or step down, Ememobong chose the latter, affirming his loyalty to the PDP. He respectfully submitted his resignation and extended his appreciation once more for the chance to serve the state under Governor Eno’s administration.
Governor Umo Eno formally defected to the APC on Friday and issued an ultimatum to his political appointees, insisting they join him in his new political alignment or vacate their positions. Ememobong’s resignation is one of the first high-profile responses to this mandate, highlighting the political tension and realignment within Akwa Ibom State’s leadership.
