The Police Command in Anambra State has refuted any involvement in the escape of two suspects connected to the murder of Mr. Justice Azuka, a member of the State Assembly. Azuka, who represented the Onitsha-1 Constituency, was tragically killed by suspected kidnappers. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), addressed the issue in a statement on Thursday.
Ikenga emphasized that the police could not be complicit in aiding the escape of individuals they had previously risked their lives to apprehend alongside other security agencies. He pointed out that the police were committed to bringing justice for the brutal murder of Hon. Justice Azuka and would not undermine their own efforts by sabotaging the case. He also reminded the public that the police had previously paraded the suspects to the residents of the state, highlighting their accountability in the matter.
Ikenga further stated that while the police were taking responsibility for the incident, their primary focus at this point was to investigate the operational lapses that led to the suspects’ escape. He assured that those responsible for the failure would face serious consequences. The two suspects had been arrested by a joint security force earlier for their involvement in the murder of the lawmaker but managed to escape during an operation aimed at capturing another suspect also linked to the crime.
