The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has called on the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race over claims concerning the financial records of Anambra State during his tenure as governor.

The council, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Alake, said recent financial records released by the Anambra State Government contradicted Obi’s repeated claim that he left the state without outstanding liabilities.
According to the council, Obi’s administration contracted external loans valued at about $123.77 million during his eight years as governor. It said eight loan facilities remained outstanding when he left office in March 2014 and were subsequently serviced by succeeding administrations.

The loans, according to the Anambra State Government, were connected to projects involving healthcare, education, erosion control and malaria prevention. The state government said about $92.35 million remained outstanding as of June 30, 2026.

The APC campaign council also raised concerns over alleged salary arrears involving workers of the former Anambra State Water Corporation. It referred to a 2006 memorandum by Obi’s then Chief of Staff, Chuks Ileogbunam, concerning unpaid salaries owed to the corporation’s workers.

The council said the development contradicted Obi’s previous position that he left the state without financial liabilities. It therefore urged him to honour his earlier pledge to withdraw from the presidential race if it was established that his administration left liabilities behind in Anambra State.

However, Obi has rejected the allegations. He maintained that his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in inherited gratuities and arrears and left office without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or debts owed to contractors for properly completed and certified projects.

Obi had also challenged the Anambra State Government to provide evidence to support its claims, saying he would stop campaigning for the presidency if the allegations were established.
