Boko Haram attacks leave 40 dead, villagers abducted

A tragic attack has claimed the lives of at least 40 farmers in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State. The assault, carried out by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, left many missing, raising concerns about possible abductions. The attack occurred around 4:30 PM on Sunday, with survivors recounting harrowing experiences.

Borno’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, confirmed the incident, emphasizing ongoing investigations. Initial reports indicate that several farmers ventured beyond military-designated safety zones, making them vulnerable to attacks. Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the violence and urged the military to eliminate insurgent hideouts in the Lake Chad region.

This attack follows a similar one in Chibok, where two people were killed, and a church was set ablaze. Kukawa has endured numerous attacks since 2014, with large-scale displacements and loss of life. In response, the governor reiterated the importance of adhering to safety perimeters and praised ongoing military efforts to secure the region.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, highlighted the military’s precision in airstrikes, addressing concerns over collateral damage. He emphasized the military’s strategy to disrupt terrorist funding and operations, including international collaborations to trace financing sources. The government is also pursuing legal action against a media report alleging misconduct in counter-insurgency efforts.

Efforts are underway to reunite survivors with their families and enhance security measures, reflecting the state’s commitment to addressing insurgency and restoring peace in affected regions.
