Federal Government Reverses Decision Announces New Minimum Wage Implementation
Federal Government Reverses Decision Announces New Minimum Wage Implementation: The Federal Government on worker’s day announced that despite ongoing negotiations
by the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage, workers will still benefit as
the new minimum wage becomes effective from May 1, 2024. Speaking at the May Day celebration
in Abuja, Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha assured Nigerian workers of this development.
Previously reported by LEADERSHIP, the Federal Government approved a salary increase ranging from 25% to 35% for civil servants across six Consolidated Salary Structures. These structures include CONPSS, CONRAISS, CONPOSS, CONPASS, CONICCS, and CONAFSS, with the increment retroactively effective from January 1, 2024.
the regrets
Expressing regret over the delay in finalizing the new national minimum wage, the Minister emphasized
ongoing consultations to expedite the process and ensure its prompt release. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had urged the administration to accelerate and finalize the wage review.
the new minimum wage
Recently, Organised Labour demanded a new minimum wage of N615,000 to address economic realities
and the high cost of living faced by Nigerians. They argued that the current N30,000 minimum wage,
which was enacted in 2019 by the previous administration, no longer meets the needs of Nigerian workers, especially as some governors have not implemented it consistently. The Minimum Wage Act of 2019 stipulates a review every five years to align with evolving economic conditions.
