——- Says there is urgent need for serious introspection on the future of our democracy and a renewed commitment to strengthening regional security systems.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region following a surge in coups and attempted mutinies threatening political stability.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
The emergency meeting brought together top regional officials to assess growing insecurity and the increasing trend of unconstitutional power grabs in the sub-region.
He stressed that ECOWAS must act decisively to protect democratic governance and prevent further destabilisation across member states.
The declaration marks one of ECOWAS’s strongest regional alerts in recent years as leaders work to address what they describe as a mounting threat to peace, stability, and democratic institutions in West Africa.
