Burnham Sworn in after Starmer resignation as UK Prime Minister After Shock Resignation

The race to succeed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer gathered momentum on Monday as leading contender Andy Burnham was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament, marking a significant milestone in his push to take over the country’s top political office.

The development followed Starmer’s announcement that he would step down as prime minister after serving less than two years in office. His resignation came amid growing pressure from within the Labour Party and mounting public dissatisfaction, particularly after Burnham secured a crucial by-election victory last week that strengthened calls for a change in leadership.

Burnham’s path to Downing Street appeared to become even clearer after former health secretary Wes Streeting declared his support for the former Manchester mayor instead of launching a rival bid. With nominations for the Labour leadership expected to open on July 9 and close on July 16, Burnham could become Britain’s next prime minister as early as mid-July if no serious challenger emerges.

In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer acknowledged that he had lost the confidence of Labour lawmakers. His voice faltered as he announced that he had informed King Charles III of his decision to resign, paving the way for the party to elect a new leader who would automatically become prime minister.

Although stepping down as Labour leader, Starmer said he would remain in office until the leadership transition was completed to ensure stability and a smooth transfer of power. During the speech, he expressed gratitude to his wife, Victoria, and their children, struggling to contain his emotions as he reflected on his time in office.

The outgoing prime minister requested that Labour’s National Executive Committee establish a timetable for selecting his successor. Under the proposed schedule, the leadership contest would be completed before a key UK-European Union summit scheduled for July 22 in Brussels.

Starmer entered office in July 2024 after leading Labour to a landslide election victory that ended 14 years of Conservative rule. Internationally, he earned recognition for his support of Ukraine, commitment to NATO, and efforts to strengthen relations with European partners.

However, his administration soon became plagued by a series of domestic challenges. Repeated policy reversals, declining public approval, cabinet resignations and controversies surrounding key appointments weakened his authority. One of the most damaging episodes involved criticism over his decision to appoint an associate of the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as Britain’s ambassador to Washington.

Labour’s poor performance in local and regional elections earlier this year further intensified concerns about Starmer’s leadership. Many party members concluded that he was unable to halt the growing popularity of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, which has climbed to the top of several national opinion polls.

Despite earlier vows to resist any attempt to remove him, reports suggested that senior ministers eventually convinced Starmer that his position had become untenable following Burnham’s by-election triumph, which enabled him to contest the party leadership.

Burnham, who previously served in Labour governments under former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, has been mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017. His journey from Manchester to London on Monday attracted significant media attention, with television networks closely following his arrival in the capital.

After taking his seat in the House of Commons, Burnham signaled his intention to seek the Labour leadership, calling for a responsible and orderly transition. Posting on social media platform X, he confirmed that he would put himself forward as part of the process.

Streeting’s endorsement further boosted Burnham’s prospects. The former health secretary said he believed Burnham possessed the qualities necessary to confront the growing influence of nationalist political movements and unite Labour behind a winning strategy.

Nevertheless, questions remain about the extent of Burnham’s mandate and his plans for government. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage quickly seized on the political uncertainty, demanding an immediate general election and arguing that the public should decide who governs the country.

Burnham, often associated with Labour’s moderate soft-left faction, recently demonstrated his electoral appeal by comfortably defeating Reform UK’s candidate in Makerfield. Yet some Labour MPs remain cautious, noting that he has offered limited details about how he would govern if he assumes office.

Reports in British media suggest that Burnham may undertake significant cabinet changes, including replacing Chancellor Rachel Reeves while retaining Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Starmer’s resignation marks a dramatic chapter in British politics. Having promised stability and economic renewal after years of Conservative turmoil following the 2016 Brexit referendum, he ultimately became another prime minister whose tenure was cut short by political pressures.

As Labour prepares to choose its next leader, many voters are watching closely to see whether Burnham can restore confidence in the government and steer the party through increasingly challenging political terrain ahead of the next general election, expected in 2029.
