CAN Opposes Church Tax in Abia State

The Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed strong opposition to a new tax policy imposed on church signposts in the state. In a recent statement, the organization lamented that Abia is uniquely taxing churches in this manner, making it the only state in Nigeria to do so. The letter, dated October 22, 2024, and signed by Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, the State CAN chairman, and Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the State CAN secretary, urged the Governor to reconsider the policy to prevent Christians in the state from perceiving the government as antagonistic toward the church.

The letter articulates their discontent with the government’s decision to require churches to pay taxes on their signage, emphasizing that, as a state that identifies with Christianity, this policy is particularly disappointing. The Christian leaders pleaded with the Governor to address the issue promptly, highlighting that such measures could alienate the Christian community and lead them to view the administration as hostile to their beliefs.

Additionally, the letter suggests the possibility of convening a roundtable discussion involving state Christian leaders to explore constructive solutions to this sensitive issue. The leaders expressed hope for a positive response from the Governor, reiterating their commitment to support and pray for the administration. They aim for a resolution that acknowledges the importance of the church within the community while fostering a cooperative relationship between the government and religious institutions.
