Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Danone Amend Plastic Recycling Claims Following EU Greenwashing Pressure

Major global beverage and food conglomerates—including Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Danone—have officially agreed to alter their corporate recycling claims on plastic packaging following sustained regulatory pressure from the European Union.

This regulatory intervention comes in the wake of complaints lodged by European consumer protection groups back in November 2023, which accused the multinational corporations of engaging in misleading greenwashing practices regarding their bottled water products and packaging materials.

Under the newly agreed terms coordinated by the European Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network, the companies are required to revise specific wording on their product labels to ensure absolute transparency for eco-conscious shoppers. For instance, the ambiguous slogan previously printed on bottles stating “I am a bottle made from 100% recycled plastic” is being phased out and replaced with clearer phrasing such as “This bottle is 100% recycled, excluding cap and label.”

This critical modification ensures that consumers are accurately informed that caps and labels are not manufactured from recycled components. Furthermore, product branding will now feature directives like “Recycle me” rather than “Recycle me again,” eliminating any false consumer impressions that an individual plastic bottle has already undergone multiple prior recycling cycles.

In addition to modifying physical packaging across the bloc’s 27 member states, the corporations have committed to updating their digital marketing campaigns and online communications to strictly align with these truthful advertising standards. Regulatory authorities have noted that Coca-Cola and Nestlé have already begun implementing several of these required changes across digital platforms.

This enforcement action highlights a growing global crackdown on corporate greenwashing, compelling multinational giants to substantiate their environmental claims and provide consumers with precise, verifiable data regarding product sustainability.
