In a recent interview with Symfoni News, Tawfiq Akinwale, the Oyo State Labour Party (LP) candidate for the 2023 governorship election, expressed his concerns about the potential consequences Nigeria could have faced if Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate, had won the recently concluded presidential election. Akinwale highlighted Obi’s perceived intolerance towards fellow countrymen who practice Islam as a key reason behind his apprehension.
Akinwale emphasized that Obi’s attitude and behavior exemplify a lack of tolerance towards Muslims in Nigeria. He pointed out that several governorship candidates from the Labour Party, particularly from the northern region, defected to other opposition parties, attributing their departures to Obi’s leadership style. Akinwale stated that Obi’s actions during the campaign period, such as failing to introduce and acknowledge candidates from Muslim-dominated states like Sokoto, Taraba, and Kano, led to a feeling of marginalization among these individuals, ultimately prompting them to switch allegiances.
Expressing his relief at Obi’s defeat in the presidential election, Akinwale underscored his belief that Obi’s politics are intertwined with tribalism, and he questioned the suitability of someone with such tendencies leading the country. He emphasized that Nigeria is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation that requires leaders who can bridge divides and uphold unity rather than exacerbate divisions.
Akinwale further criticized Obi for not engaging with the Muslim community during his campaign, noting that the absence of mosque visits and outreach to Muslim gatherings further highlighted his perceived lack of tolerance. Akinwale argued that these actions, combined with Obi’s alleged altitude, presented a worrisome picture of a leader who might not prioritize the interests and concerns of the Muslim population.
While Akinwale’s remarks reflect his personal opinion, they shed light on concerns surrounding Obi’s leadership style and its potential impact on Nigeria’s social fabric. The issue of religious tolerance and inclusivity is crucial in a diverse country like Nigeria, where adherents of different faiths coexist. As the nation moves forward, it is essential for leaders to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to fostering unity and understanding among diverse religious and ethnic groups.
