Cooking Gas Prices Soar by Over 44% Year-on-Year – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a 44.51% year-on-year increase in the average retail price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, as of July 2025.

According to the NBS’s latest LPG Price Watch Report released on Tuesday, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder rose from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025, underscoring the mounting financial pressure on Nigerian households.

Despite the annual surge, the report highlighted a slight 1.91% month-on-month decrease from ₦21,010.56 in June 2025 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025. However, analysts caution that this minor drop may not indicate a long-term downward trend.

The NBS noted that the same month in 2024 saw a 9.37% month-on-month reduction, with prices falling from ₦15,736.27 in June 2024 to ₦14,261.57 in July 2024—a stark contrast to the current inflationary trend.

For smaller 5kg cylinders, the average price dipped slightly by 0.96% month-on-month, from ₦8,323.95 in June 2025 to ₦8,243.79 in July. However, on a year-on-year basis, this reflected a significant 37.98% increase from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024.

A breakdown by state revealed that Adamawa recorded the highest average price for a 12.5kg refill at ₦22,528.39, followed closely by Rivers (₦22,512.49) and Taraba (₦22,363.57). The lowest prices were seen in Yobe (₦19,030.00), Niger (₦19,154.99), and Nasarawa (₦20,000.62).

In the 5kg category, Adamawa again had the highest average price at ₦9,011.36, trailed by Rivers (₦9,005.00) and Taraba (₦8,945.43), while Yobe had the lowest at ₦7,612.00, followed by Niger (₦7,662.00) and Nasarawa (₦8,000.25).

Regionally, the South-South zone posted the highest average retail price for a 12.5kg refill at ₦21,278.14, followed by the South-East (₦20,802.89), while the South-West had the lowest at ₦20,184.79. For the 5kg cylinder, South-South again ranked highest at ₦8,511.26, ahead of South-East (₦8,321.16), with South-West recording the lowest at ₦8,073.92.

The NBS said the report was based on data collected from over 10,000 respondents across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
