Dele Momodu, a notable figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former presidential aspirant, has openly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his timely intervention in the recent mass sealing of properties in Abuja. This action, carried out by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under the directive of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, involved the closure of over 4,000 buildings for defaulting on ground rent payments. Prominent among the affected properties were the PDP national secretariat, offices of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Access Bank, TotalEnergies, and Ibro Hotel, all located in the Wuse Zone.
The move stirred considerable controversy, with many interpreting it as politically motivated due to the inclusion of the PDP headquarters. In response to the public outcry and political tension, President Tinubu stepped in and halted the aggressive enforcement. Following his intervention, the FCTA, through its Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, issued a statement announcing a 14-day grace period for property owners to settle their outstanding ground rents along with associated penalties.
Reacting to the development via his social media platform, Momodu expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s leadership and criticized Wike’s perceived overreach. He described Wike as a disruptive figure acting as though he were a co-president, imposing his will unchecked. Momodu stressed that while it is important for citizens and institutions to fulfill their financial obligations to the government, enforcement should not come across as punitive or politically charged.
He further lamented Wike’s ongoing confrontations, particularly his disruptive involvement in Rivers State politics, which he believes is causing unnecessary hardship. Drawing a comparison with other ministers, Momodu highlighted the humility of Works Minister Dave Umahi, suggesting Wike could learn from such conduct. He concluded by asserting that President Tinubu’s move sends a clear message that there cannot be two leaders in a single administration and expressed hope that Wike now understands his place within the hierarchy.
