Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has announced his intention to adopt a strategy used by President Bola Tinubu by organizing a virtual inauguration of completed state projects. This method, he stated, would allow for the efficient unveiling of numerous projects spread across the state. The governor made this known during the formal commissioning of eight newly constructed state-of-the-art residential units for commissioners in Asaba on Monday.
The housing project includes eight units of four-bedroom duplexes, each with two boys’ quarters, and was initiated to address the shortage of official accommodations for commissioners. Governor Oborevwori noted that prior to this development, only 22 out of the 30 commissioners had been provided with government quarters. With the addition of these new buildings, all commissioners now have access to official housing.
Speaking further, the governor emphasized the importance of government officials living in close proximity, as it fosters better cooperation, enhances unity, improves work ethics, and increases overall productivity within the cabinet. The project, which was approved in February the previous year, demonstrates the government’s commitment to the welfare of top officials.
While commending the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, for successfully executing the project, Oborevwori also addressed recent speculations about a cabinet reshuffle. He dismissed the rumors of an impending dissolution but made it clear that non-performing commissioners would not be retained. “If you are not performing, you will be dropped,” he stated, revealing that three commissioners had already been identified as underperforming.
In his remarks, Commissioner Angele thanked the governor for the trust and support shown throughout the project, acknowledging his supervisory role in ensuring timely delivery. Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Fidelis Tilije, praised the addition of new housing but also appealed for the renovation of the older units to enhance their value.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries including HRM Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, the Asagba of Asaba; Elder Omeni Sobotie, APC State Chairman; and Justice Tessy Diai, Delta’s Chief Judge.
