Authorities have begun an investigation as the Delta State Government strongly denounced reports of harassment and sexual assault targeting women during a festival in Ozoro, describing the actions as inhumane and completely unacceptable.
In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, urged security agencies to thoroughly probe the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
He emphasized that law enforcement must track down the culprits behind what he described as grievous crimes, stressing that no individual or group should exploit cultural celebrations as a cover for unlawful behavior.
Aniagwu reassured residents that the government remains dedicated to safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of all citizens, particularly women and other vulnerable groups. He also called on community leaders and festival organisers across the state to strengthen security arrangements to protect participants and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Reaffirming its stance, the state government reiterated a strict zero-tolerance policy on gender-based violence, warning that anyone found guilty would face severe legal consequences.

Responding to the incident on X (formerly Twitter), the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, reacting to one of the viral videos, described the situation as disturbing, shameful, and unacceptable.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed a full investigation into the matter, assuring the public that justice will be served. He also stressed that no cultural practice or tradition overrides the fundamental rights of citizens.
Edafe appealed to members of the public with useful information to come forward and assist the police in their ongoing inquiries.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in Oruamudhu community in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, has sparked widespread outrage. Viral videos circulating online show disturbing scenes of young women being attacked, with some men forcibly tearing their clothes.
In one of the clips, a distressed young woman is seen in tears, struggling to shield herself while being harassed, further fueling public condemnation and calls for accountability.
