Delta State Governor Oborevwori and PDP Leaders Defect to APC in Historic Political Shift

ASABA — In a significant political development in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and several prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, explained that the decision to leave the PDP was driven by the need to align with a political platform better suited to advancing the state’s development goals and addressing the needs of its citizens. Aniagwu noted that extensive consultations had been conducted before reaching this decision, adding, “The political climate has shifted, and we must adapt to ensure Delta State remains on the path of progress, security, and development.”

Former Senator for Delta South and founding PDP Chairman in the state, Senator James Manager, echoed these sentiments, describing the move as a difficult but necessary step. He likened the situation to abandoning a sinking ship, emphasizing that the decision was made after thorough deliberations. “This marks the culmination of extensive discussions and a collective resolve to pursue a new direction,” Manager stated.

The meeting was attended by key figures, including Delta State Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, as well as members of the National and State Assemblies, commissioners, local government chairmen, and other stakeholders.

This defection marks a historic shift in Delta State’s political dynamics, as it is the first time since 1999 that both a sitting governor and a former governor have left the PDP for another party. The move signals a realignment of political forces in the state, setting the stage for significant changes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
