Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State marked the 2025 Workers’ Day with a goodwill gesture, announcing a monetary gift of ₦10,000 to all state workers in celebration of their hard work and dedication. The announcement was made during the May Day celebration held in Abakaliki, which was themed: “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.”
Addressing the gathering, Governor Nwifuru described the workforce as the “engine room” of government operations and pledged his continued commitment to improving their welfare. He acknowledged the vital role that civil servants play in the development of both the state and the nation at large. “Under my leadership,” the governor affirmed, “workers will remain a symbol of excellence, and I will remain indebted to them for their resilience and service.” He noted that May Day should serve not only as a celebration but also as a reflection of the contributions workers make to national progress. The governor also expressed his administration’s commitment to addressing workers’ challenges, ensuring a conducive civic space, and promoting partnership between the government and labor for the advancement of Ebonyi State.
Meanwhile, in a joint address, Professor Ogugua Egwu, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Mr. Chidi Igboji of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) lauded Governor Nwifuru for implementing the ₦75,000 minimum wage, describing it as a significant step toward economic relief for workers. However, the labor leaders also highlighted some ongoing concerns. They pointed out the delayed provision of shuttle buses to the State Secretariat in Centenary City, which has made commuting difficult for employees. The unions also appealed for the development of affordable housing projects to help workers cope with rising rental costs. Additionally, they called for increased pension payments for retirees and improved infrastructure in government offices, urging the governor to take swift action on these issues.
