ECTDA Chairman Denies Assault, Clarifies Incident with Nigerian Army Over Property Dispute

The Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), Chief Uche Anya, clarified that military officers from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu did not assault him but instead targeted his residence. Anya made this known during a visit from former members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, led by Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, to his office in Enugu.

Contrary to reports circulating on social media, Anya refuted claims of being physically attacked or having his police aide killed during the incident. He described the occurrence as a misunderstanding between the ECTDA and military personnel. “I am completely fine, hale, and hearty,” Anya stated.

Explaining the events, Anya revealed that on December 5, ECTDA received a report about ongoing construction at Park Avenue, GRA. Upon investigation, the developers failed to provide necessary permits and were reportedly guarded by soldiers. When approached, they requested that Anya contact the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division. Despite their refusal to present approvals, ECTDA issued a “Stop Work” order. However, the developers ignored the directive and resumed construction, prompting ECTDA to demolish the erected fence.

Anya narrated that, hours later, his neighborhood witnessed unusual activity, including individuals taking photographs. Early the following morning, armed personnel in two armored vehicles arrived at his residence. Through CCTV, he observed them attempting to force entry, which they achieved after nearly 90 minutes.

Despite exaggerated social media reports, Anya confirmed that the issue has since been resolved. He expressed gratitude to the visiting delegation for their concern. Dr. Ogbonnia, speaking on behalf of the group, praised Anya for his dedication to urban planning and adherence to the law. He criticized the disregard for authority and emphasized ECTDA’s role in preserving the aesthetic and structural integrity of Enugu.

Ogbonnia commended Anya’s commitment to ensuring illegal structures are not permitted, adding that the chairman’s meticulous approach enhances the city’s development. The delegation reiterated their support and expressed confidence in Anya’s leadership.
