Edo Community Urges Governor Okpebholo to Intervene as Kingship Crisis Threatens Peace

Tensions have gripped the Ikpeshi community in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, prompting concerned residents to urgently appeal to Governor Monday Okpebholo to intervene in a bubbling kingship dispute threatening the peace of the area.

Community representatives warned that an unmitigated escalation of the traditional leadership crisis could trigger severe civil unrest, resulting in avoidable loss of lives, destruction of properties, and deep-seated friction among kindred families.

The unrest was triggered by a recent decision from the Edo State Government—conveyed through the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor—which revoked the regency of HRH Nicholas Odamah III and appointed Lukeman Momodu as his replacement. While the state administration maintained that the leadership overhaul was instituted in the interest of peace, stability, and due process following recurring traditional disputes, community members have fiercely contested the move.

Speaking on behalf of the residents during a press briefing, Ms. Peggy Agbo questioned the rationale behind the sudden removal of the incumbent regent, who she credited with restoring relative peace and tranquility to the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan.

The community has passionately called on Governor Okpebholo to review and reverse the contentious directive to restore public confidence and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

However, the state government remains firm on its stance; the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, clarified that the administrative action was taken strictly in compliance with existing court judgments concerning the disputed stool. As stakeholders await further official responses, community leaders continue to urge calm while imploring the state government to engage in impartial dialogue to achieve a lasting resolution.
