END OF AN ERA: CRISTIANO RONALDO ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year career with the Seleção. The 41-year-old superstar made the announcement on Thursday, releasing a deeply emotional farewell letter and video addressed to the nation ahead of manager Jorge Jesus’ upcoming squad selection.

Ronaldo leaves international football as the all-time leading goalscorer and most capped player in men’s international history, registering a staggering 146 goals in 234 appearances since making his senior debut in August 2003. During his two decades of service, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner captained Portugal to historic triumphs, including the UEFA European Championship title in Euro 2016 and Nations League silverware.

In his poignant farewell letter, Ronaldo reflected on his journey from Madeira to global stardom, writing: “To the Portuguese people, the day has come to hand back the shirt and the captain’s armband of the national team that belongs to all of us… Today, the moment has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the head alone. They are also made with the heart.”

The forward emphasized that while he gave everything on the pitch—experiencing both unforgettable victories and painful defeats—his greatest career achievement was representing his country. “I spent my life working to become the best player in the world. Today, I realize that my greatest victory was earning the honor of representing the best country in the world,” Ronaldo stated.

The decision follows a tumultuous period within the national team camp following a rift with head coach Jorge Jesus during October’s Nations League campaign. Although his international career has now closed, the Al-Nassr star assured fans he will forever remain a passionate supporter of the Portuguese team.
