Federal Government Takes Bold Step to Clean Up Nollywood with New Regulations: The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB)
has announced that the Federal Government has approved regulations prohibiting the depiction of money rituals, ritual killings, tobacco,
and nicotine products in Nigerian films. The regulations, which also aim to prevent the glamorization of vices, were approved by the
Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004.
Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/CEO of the NFVCB, made the announcement at a National Stakeholders Engagement on
Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu. The event, organized by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa
(CAPPA), brought together movie producers, directors, actors, and leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry.
the emphasis
Husseini emphasized that the film industry is facing an emergency that requires bold and ambitious actions from all stakeholders.
He noted that the regulation is a response to the need to sanitize the film industry and protect the youth from the negative influence
of smoking and other vices glamorized in films.
The NFVCB has forwarded the approved regulations to the Federal Ministry of Justice for gazetting and plans to undertake detailed
enlightenment programs in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups, and other institutions to
educate stakeholders on the dangers of smoking and other vices.
the board
The Board is committed to supporting smoke-free movies and promoting positive health messages through creative content.
It has planned innovative ways to achieve its mandate, including registering all film and video outlets across the country and keeping a register of registered outlets.
The regulations aim to promote a safer and healthier film industry that contributes positively to the well-being of Nigerians, particularly the youth. The NFVCB seeks collaboration with stakeholders to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.
