FG Approves New Allowances, Full DTA and Enhanced Retirement Benefits for Civil Servants

The Federal Government has approved a review of special allowances, welfare packages, and retirement benefits for civil servants, a move aimed at improving their overall earnings and boosting morale within the public workforce.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, who explained that the adjustments apply to workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).

She noted that the revised allowances cut across all grade levels, ensuring both junior and senior officers benefit from increased take-home pay. According to her, most allowances outlined in the Public Service Rules have now been updated to reflect current realities.

One of the notable changes is the approval of full Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending authorised training programmes, regardless of whether such training involves travel. This means workers can now receive full DTA even for training conducted within their duty locations.

Beyond salary-related improvements, the government has also introduced a new exit benefit scheme for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. Effective January 1, 2026, retiring civil servants will receive 100 percent of their final total earnings as an exit package, in addition to their regular pension benefits. The initiative is intended to ensure financial security and dignity after service.

In addition, the government confirmed the full implementation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, designed to provide financial support to workers in cases of work-related injury or death.

These reforms come amid increasing pressure from labour unions for better welfare conditions, as rising living costs continue to strain workers. They also follow an earlier salary adjustment of between 25 and 35 percent approved for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures.
