Garba Shehu Debunks Rift Rumors, Affirms Buhari’s Loyalty to Tinubu and APC

Mallam Garba Shehu, former spokesperson to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has addressed rumors suggesting a fallout between Buhari and the current Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu. Speaking during an interview on Trust TV’s 30 Minutes, Shehu firmly dismissed claims of any tension or conflict between the two leaders. According to him, there is no official disagreement or animosity, and the narratives being pushed in the media are largely based on assumptions and personal interpretations rather than verified facts.

Shehu clarified that President Buhari remains a loyal member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party that brought him to power after three failed attempts. He emphasized that Buhari holds deep gratitude for the APC, which gave him the platform to serve two terms as president. According to Shehu, Buhari often states that he would never betray the party that helped him achieve his political ambition. “He always says, ‘I will never be ungrateful. I will never betray the party that gave me two terms in office,’” Shehu shared.

Addressing speculations about division within the ruling party, Shehu maintained that Buhari and those in his political circle are unbothered by such talk. He noted that while people are entitled to their opinions and free to express them, such opinions should not be mistaken for factual divisions within the APC leadership.

He further explained that those who were involved in the formation of the APC in 2014—after several failed coalition attempts—know the level of commitment and sacrifice it took to build the party. As such, they are unlikely to be the ones attempting to weaken it now. Shehu pointed out that APC’s eventual victory in 2015 was the result of years of effort, strategy, and unity among opposition forces. Therefore, it is unreasonable to believe that the same individuals who helped establish the party would now work to destroy it.
