ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Meet to Address Security Threats: The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has urged his counterparts from ECOWAS countries to work tirelessly to prevent military takeovers

and undemocratic changes in government, citing the negative economic

consequences for the sub-region. Speaking at the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, Gen Musa emphasized

the need to uphold democratic values and eradicate the threat of military coups.

The meeting, which focused on tackling insecurity and threats like

terrorism and extremism, aimed to prevent coups and ensure peace

and sustainable development in the West Africa region. Gen Musa expressed

optimism that the meeting would help address the root causes and

symptoms of insecurity, stressing the importance of collaboration, intelligence sharing, and coordination across borders.

The meeting’s agenda included critical areas such as the proposed Air Force Security Support Mission in Sierra Leone, the Activation of the Air Force Standby Force Against Terrorism, and Air Force Peace Support Operations. Gen Musa highlighted the threats of terrorism, insurgency, organized crime, violence, and unconstitutional government takeovers, which undermine national security and socio-economic development.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, also emphasized the need for joint efforts to counter terrorism, manage cross-border crimes, and enhance transparency. He stressed the importance of collective strengths and shared expertise in addressing security threats and working towards lasting solutions.
