……….Analysts Applaud Progress
Governor Peter Mbah’s bold strides in the healthcare sector have earned fresh applause as the Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria, Enugu Branch, endorsed the remarkable infrastructural and institutional reforms at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane. The Guild, led by Dr. Igboke Ambrose, visited the hospital on Monday, 14th June 2025, to assess the impact of the administration’s investments and policy interventions on public health delivery.
Welcoming the delegation, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Bertrand Amechi, declared that Governor Mbah’s administration has delivered unprecedented projects that have repositioned Parklane as a flagship of modern healthcare in the South East. Notable among these is the construction of a triage centre in record time , a prerequisite for national accreditation and a twin six-storey medical complex with dedicated consultant offices, lecture halls, and parking facilities; a testament to what the CMD described as “visionary and strategic leadership.”
Prof. Amechi also highlighted the comprehensive upgrade of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit, now equipped with seven operational ambulances and enhanced medical services. The administration, he noted, has equally prioritised patient welfare with improved conveniences, reliable water supply, and an ophthalmology department now being equipped for its long-awaited accreditation.
In a strategic breakthrough, the CMD,Prof.Amaechi announced that Parklane has secured nomination as a West African Centre for Surgeons’ Part I and II Examinations ,an annual professional event expected to boost Enugu’s economic activities and medical prestige. Reinforcing this human capital drive, the state government has increased house officer positions from 50 to 120 and extended internship slots to nursing, pharmacy, radiography, medical laboratory, and physiotherapy graduates. The General Out Patients Department (GOPD) Iji-Nike Clinic Enugu, has also been mapped as a new training hub for family physicians.
Staff welfare has equally received decisive attention. Prof. Amechi confirmed the payment of arrears owed to 250 personnel by December 2024, NHIS enrollment for staff, and the replacement of 120 nurses. He further disclosed that the Radiography Department is nearing full accreditation, while Anaesthesiology has secured partial accreditation, all milestones credited to the Mbah administration’s healthcare blueprint.
Maintaining infrastructure sustainability despite rising energy costs, the CMD revealed that the state government has guaranteed uninterrupted power supply to the hospital and is actively exploring solar energy solutions to mitigate expenses. Prof. Amechi lauded Governor Mbah’s leadership as “transformational, deliberate, and future-focused,” expressing confidence that within two months, Parklane would secure full accreditation as a certified teaching hospital, positioning it among Nigeria’s and Africa’s top medical institutions.
The visiting analysts commended the administration’s healthcare reforms, describing Parklane as a “model of responsive governance and strategic sectoral investment,” while urging the hospital management to ensure sustained monitoring of other critical areas, particularly in guaranteeing that patients receive proper and adequate medical treatment.
