Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has imposed a ban on the use of fireworks, including knockouts, bangers, and other explosive devices, throughout the state during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This prohibition applies to both urban and rural areas and is aimed at protecting lives and property during the festive season.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the measure seeks to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the celebratory atmosphere to instill fear or carry out unlawful activities. The directive mandates law enforcement agencies, including the police, to apprehend anyone found violating the ban.
Additionally, the state government has tasked local Mayors, Traditional Rulers, and Town Unions across the state’s 17 local government areas with ensuring the effective enforcement of the directive. The statement noted, “The Abia State Government has banned the use of fireworks, knockouts, and other explosive materials during the upcoming festive period. This decision was taken to safeguard lives and properties and to prevent potential misuse by criminals seeking to create panic or commit crimes under the guise of celebrations.”
Residents were urged to cooperate fully with the authorities to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season. The government stressed that violators would face strict legal consequences, and security agencies were directed to enforce the ban rigorously. The statement concluded with an appeal for compliance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety, peace, and harmony during the festivities.
