In a major boost to youth empowerment and economic self-reliance, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has disbursed N3.5 billion in start-up capital to 8,300 young people under the second phase of the 1Youth 2Skills programme. The disbursement event took place at the International Convention Centre in Awka and was attended by top state officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other dignitaries.
Governor Soludo described the initiative as a strategic move to develop human capital and tackle unemployment. He encouraged the beneficiaries to transform their newly acquired skills into meaningful ventures, noting that this programme is designed to promote self-employment and reduce dependency on government jobs. “You’ve received the training,” Soludo said, “Now it’s time to build something of your own.”
He also acknowledged the partnership with Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), whose business school played a major role in training the beneficiaries. He urged the graduates to make the most of the knowledge and tools provided to them.
Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Mba, highlighted the broader goals of the programme, stating that it includes retraining, SME certification, and value reorientation, all aimed at reshaping how young people approach employment. “It’s a shift from a consumption-driven mindset to one rooted in productivity, creativity, and real impact,” he explained.
One of the recipients, Bagbile Daniel Kehinde, a corps member from Ogun State, shared his gratitude, stating that the training he received in cinematography through UNIZIK’s business school has already helped him launch a self-sustaining career. He praised the programme for its inclusiveness and long-term vision.
Other beneficiaries echoed similar sentiments, calling it the most impactful empowerment scheme they’ve encountered. They thanked the Soludo administration for offering not just skills training but also real financial support to kickstart their businesses.
This programme marks a significant step toward reducing youth unemployment in Anambra and reflects the state government’s commitment to grassroots economic transformation through sustainable skill development.
