Army’s N300,000 Compensation for Slain Teenager Sparks Outrage and Denials
Army’s N300.000 Compensation for Slain Teenager Sparks Outrage and Denials: The Nigerian Army has provided compensation to the family of 16-year-old Ismail Muhammad,
who was fatally shot by soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna state, during a 24-hour
curfew imposed on August 5. The army’s General Officer Commanding
(GOC) 1 Division, Major General M.L.D. Saraso, visited the family and presented them with a package containing total sum of N300,000.
Ismail’s brother, Abubakar Muhammad, revealed that the soldiers were
enforcing the curfew when their bullets pierced through the door of their family house, killing Ismail. He emphasized that there were no protests in their area, Samaru, and that Ismail was not involved in any demonstrations nor any sort of protest.
the frustration
Abubakar expressed frustration over the spread of false information
that Ismail was part of the protest. He clarified that the family was at home
when the soldiers approached, and Ismail was shot while inside the house.
The family had shown evidence of the shooting to the GOC, including the
damaged door and bullet holes.
The compensation of N300,000 was provided in a package labeled “GOC Nigerian Army,” which Abubakar believed was meant as a condolence gift. However, he noted that
rumors had circulated that the family received N70 million, which was not true.
the protest
Ismail’s death has left his family, including his parents in their 50s and
five siblings, in mourning. Abubakar described Samaru as a peaceful area,
where no protests occurred, and emphasized that Ismail’s killing was an
unfortunate incident that has caused immense pain to the family.
