House of Representatives Calls for Improved Maternal Healthcare
House of Representatives Calls for Improved Maternal Healthcare: The House of Representatives has called
on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to ensure that public healthcare institutions
provide free medical treatment to pregnant women during and after delivery. This directive was made
following the adoption of a motion by Rep. Mohammed Shehu (PDP-Bauchi) during a plenary session on Wednesday.
Shehu emphasized that public healthcare institutions were established to provide medical services to the public,
and as such, should prioritize the care of pregnant women. He noted that while healthcare services are not limited
to pregnant women, efforts to provide free treatment for expectant mothers have not been fully realized.
Shehu highlighted the need for free medical treatment for pregnant women, citing Nigeria’s high fertility rate and
the importance of boosting the country’s population growth. He also pointed out that Nigeria faces high disease rates,
resulting in a significant annual maternal mortality rate due to pregnancy complications and the polio virus.
the lawmakers
The lawmaker stressed that public healthcare institutions must have adequate medical professionals and resources to
provide quality care to patients, including pregnant women, during childbirth. He emphasized the need for the government
to prioritize policy actions aimed at improving healthcare delivery systems, particularly for pregnant women, to alleviate their
hardships and boost their confidence.
The House of Representatives also urged the ministry to implement routine checks to ensure continuity, compliance by medical personnel, and sustainability of childbirth processes. This move aims to ensure that public healthcare institutions provide quality and free medical treatment to pregnant women, reducing maternal mortality rates and promoting a healthier population.
