Katsina: All 154 Students Recover After Drug Reaction, Police Confirm No Deaths

KATSINA — All 154 students affected by an adverse drug reaction at Government Science Secondary School, Batagarawa, Katsina State, have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, with the police confirming that no deaths were recorded.

The Katsina State Police Command disclosed this on Thursday, following the treatment of students who developed symptoms after receiving Praziquantel tablets during a Bilharzia prevention and treatment exercise on October 26, 2026.

The students were evacuated to designated health facilities for urgent medical attention after experiencing adverse reactions to the medication.

According to the police, the remaining 25 students who had been receiving inpatient treatment have also recovered, been discharged and reunited with their families and schoolmates.

The command said all the affected students were in good health and spirits following their treatment.

Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, commended residents for their cooperation, patience and calm throughout the incident.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq, the command urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports, particularly claims alleging that students had died.

The incident occurred during a Bilharzia treatment and prevention campaign conducted by health authorities in collaboration with Batagarawa Local Government Area.

Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, is a parasitic disease that can affect people exposed to contaminated freshwater. Praziquantel is commonly used to treat the infection.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government has said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the students’ reactions. Health Commissioner Musa Adamu Funtua previously disclosed that preliminary findings suggested a possible gap between breakfast and the administration of the medication.

The government had also assured parents that the incident was being investigated and that lessons from the findings would guide future treatment exercises.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property in the state and urged residents to rely on verified information from official sources.
