Mater Dei Parish Honors Fathers with Special Celebration and Prestigious Awards

Mater Dei Parish in Community Layout, Enugu, held a grand celebration to commemorate Father’s Day, honoring the essence of fatherhood and recognizing the men instrumental in the parish’s foundation. The event featured a special Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Dr. Theodore Ozoamalu, who praised fathers for their dedication to their families and communities. He urged them to remain steadfast in their roles, nurturing their households with love, discipline, and unwavering faith.

Rev. Fr. Collins Chigozie Eziokwu delivered a sermon titled *”Do You Love God?”*, emphasizing that true love for God is reflected in obedience to His word rather than mere loyalty to individuals. Drawing from Jesus’ call to Peter to become a “fisher of men,” he encouraged the congregation to embrace evangelism and uphold godly principles. Addressing the men, he highlighted the vital distinction between being a husband and a father, noting that while husbands fulfill social and economic responsibilities, fathers shape the intellectual, moral, and spiritual development of their children.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to distinguished parish members who have significantly contributed to its growth since its inception in 2013. Hon. Dr. Chinweike Martin, the current PDP Enugu chairman and Commissioner for Housing, received the prestigious “Ambassador of St. Joseph the Worker” award in recognition of his contributions to community development. Barr. Theodore Azodo, the pioneer president of the Catholic Men’s Organization (CMO) and current vice chairman, was named “Father of the Year.” Expressing gratitude for the honor, he pledged to continue serving with dedication.

Other honorees included the current CMO chairman, Engr Joseph Chibuko, recognized for his leadership in fostering unity within the parish, and Chief Alex Ngwudike, a respected former chairman of St. Mary’s Parish Trans-Ekulu, and many others. The occasion drew prominent dignitaries, including Enugu Governor state His excellency Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who was represented by Hon. Emeka Onah, Hon. Dr. Ken Onoh (former ECTDA chairman and presidential aide), and Hon. Emma Nnamani (former chairman, Board of Internal Revenue).

The celebration ended with a renewed commitment among parishioners to uphold the virtues of fatherhood, faith, and unity, reinforcing the strength of their community.
