The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of 47-year-old Malian coach, Eric Chelle, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday following a recommendation by the NFF’s technical and development sub-committee on January 2, which was later endorsed by the federation’s executive committee.
Chelle brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as Mali’s head coach during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. Under his leadership, Mali reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by the host nation in extra time. In addition to his international coaching experience, Chelle has managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.
As a former player, Chelle earned five caps for the Malian national team and enjoyed a successful club career in France, representing teams such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
His appointment is effective immediately, with his primary objective being to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chelle’s first major challenge will be leading the Super Eagles in their next qualification matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March. The team currently sits fifth in Group C, having failed to win any of their first four matches.
Chelle’s task will be to reinvigorate the Super Eagles and guide them back to winning ways as they strive to reclaim their dominance on the international stage.
