Nigeria’s First Entrepreneurial University Set to Commence Operations in September

In a significant development for Nigeria’s educational landscape, the inaugural entrepreneurial university, Samuel Maduka University, is preparing to open its doors to students in September of this year. Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, the university’s founder and Chairman of Peace Group of Companies, made the announcement during an interview at the campus located along the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road in Enugu State. The establishment of the university follows the approval granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Dr. Onyishi emphasized that Samuel Maduka University is pioneering a new approach to higher education with a focus on entrepreneurship. The institution aims to redefine the educational experience by equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the modern world. By emphasizing practical learning and real-world applications, the university intends to provide students with a unique educational experience that sets them apart from their peers.

In its inaugural academic year, Samuel Maduka University will offer courses through the School of Business and Social Sciences, focusing on disciplines such as accounting, economics, mass communication, political science/international relations, and transport management. The School of Computing and Engineering will offer programs in civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, electrical and electronics engineering, information technology, mechanical and mechatronics engineering, and software engineering. The School of Health Sciences will provide programs in physiotherapy, medical laboratory science, and nursing. Additionally, the university’s School of Law will offer a comprehensive law program.

Spanning over 450 hectares of land, Samuel Maduka University is a fully residential institution for both staff members and students. The campus boasts a stunning multi-colored lake surrounded by sand beaches, serving as a significant tourism attraction. Dr. Onyishi expressed pride in this picturesque feature and revealed plans for a boat house and boat club, offering tourists the opportunity to enjoy a boat ride while taking in the panoramic views. Furthermore, a park-cum-recreation center will cater to children, while dedicated shuttles will provide transportation to and from the airport and bus parks. The university places a strong emphasis on security, with exclusive provisions for an independent power generating plant and community-wide internet Wi-Fi access, ensuring a reliable supply of quality water.

When asked about his motivation for embarking on this ambitious project, Dr. Onyishi explained that it stems from his longstanding commitment to giving back to society. He made a vow to fulfill this obligation to God several years ago. Notably, every student at Samuel Maduka University will undertake entrepreneurship courses to equip them with essential entrepreneurial skills, making it the first university in Nigeria to incorporate such a curriculum. Despite its world-class status, the university aims to keep tuition fees affordable for average Nigerians. It is worth mentioning that the university’s college has already been operational since last year, setting the stage for the full-fledged launch in September.
