NIMC Enrols 120.4 Million Nigerians, Defends Hike in Data Modification Fees Amid Reforms

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that it has successfully registered over 120.4 million Nigerians for the National Identification Number (NIN). This milestone was revealed by the Director-General of the commission, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during a recent briefing. She also addressed the recent increase in the fees associated with making changes to personal information, particularly date of birth modifications.

Coker-Odusote explained that while the NIN enrolment process remains completely free for all Nigerian citizens and legal residents, fees for data alterations have been adjusted to reflect current economic challenges. For instance, the fee for changing one’s date of birth has been raised significantly—from ₦16,340 to ₦28,574—a 74.8% increase. She clarified that although this new fee seems high, it does not actually match the country’s inflation rate, which stood at 24.23% as of March 2025. Similarly, the fee for retrieving NIN via the USSD platform has increased from ₦20 to ₦50.

The Director-General emphasized that these price changes were made with the public in mind. She noted that the previous fee structures left room for exploitation and corrupt practices, leading to frequent cases of extortion by unscrupulous agents. The new pricing, she explained, is part of a broader effort to promote transparency and ensure that services are rendered fairly and efficiently.

Coker-Odusote also highlighted major infrastructural improvements within the commission, stating that these enhancements have helped reduce corruption by 40%. She proudly shared that under her administration, NIMC has integrated its systems with 120 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including major institutions such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), banks, security organizations, and correctional services.

Additionally, she announced that the commission had settled a longstanding debt of ₦280 million, rendering NIMC debt-free. As part of its internal development program, 1,300 staff members have also undergone training and received promotions, all aimed at improving service delivery and institutional efficiency.
