Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to wear Galatasaray’s iconic number nine shirt, opting instead to retain his familiar number 45 ahead of the new football season.

The Nigerian international, who completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions after an outstanding loan spell, said his decision was driven by sentiment rather than prestige, describing the number 45 as a symbol of good fortune since arriving at the club.

Osimhen had been widely tipped to inherit Galatasaray’s famous number nine jersey, traditionally worn by the club’s leading strikers and most recently associated with Argentine forward Mauro Icardi. However, the 26-year-old chose to continue with the number he has worn since joining the Istanbul giants.

Speaking about his decision, Osimhen admitted he understood the commercial appeal of the number nine shirt but insisted he preferred to stick with the jersey that has brought him success.

“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen was quoted as saying by Turkish outlet Sabah Spor.

“I want to continue with the same number,” he added.

Since arriving at Galatasaray, Osimhen has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, winning over supporters with his goals, work rate and leadership on the pitch.

His impressive performances during his initial loan spell convinced the Turkish champions to secure his services permanently, making him one of the club’s marquee signings.

The striker recently opened his pre-season goal account after finding the net in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3-3 draw against French side Rennes in Istanbul, as preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign.

Osimhen is expected to play a pivotal role as Galatasaray seek to defend their domestic title and make a strong impression in European competitions, with fans hoping his decision to keep the number 45 jersey will continue to bring the good fortune he believes it represents.
